I have wonderful news....

Desi is going home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As Desi's foster mom I am both excited and a little sad right now. Desi is on his way to his forever home in Canada. He will have an amazing life with his new Mom and Dad, Ellen and Keith.
Thank you NEBCR for taking him in and THANK YOU for trusting his care to me and my family. Who would of ever thought that the very scared and hairless no name dog would be turn into such a gem. I promised Desi that someday he would be Desirable and today I was able to keep that promise. I learned so much about myself as a dog owner and foster home since Desi came into my life. I will be eternally grateful to Desi for letting me show him people and the world can be a safe and trusted.
May you continue to grow and trust and maybe play with sheep someday Desi.

Desi the BRAVE

To all my friends and especially anyone looking for the greatest friend ever!! I have been very busy working on being a brave dog. My bio states that I am a special needs dog. I want to let people know that what I need is a patient and loving family. In return I will give you more love then you can imagine. My foster Mom and I had a long talk the other day. I was wondering why nobody was asking about me. She told me that once I could show how much I have worked on being brave my forever family would find me.

Yesterday Gavin came to visit my foster family. He was kinda scary at first but as the day went on I realized that he wasn't so scary. All the other dogs really like him so he must be o.k.

He was at the house this morning and I decided to be as brave as I could and I walked up to him and let him pet me. I thought my foster Mom would cry.

It wasn't so bad, in fact I went back again and this time he had treats.

Then I had to take a break and then I went back for some more pets!!!!

So to the world I am ready for a forever family to help me become an even braver boy

Desi's holiday wish

Desi has come so far since finding his way into rescue with NEBCR almost 8 months ago.

When Desi arrived, he was almost entirely shut down. He no longer knew what it was like to just be a dog, if he ever did. He was physically in distress inside and out. NEBCR volunteers cried when all it seemed Desi wanted to do was to disappear.

Desi now:

He has overcome skin infections and fur loss.

He has learned to trust and love his wonderful foster family.

He has overcome many of his fears of the world around him.

He plays with his foster siblings.

He really is as desirable as they come.

Although it would seem his initial wish really was to just disappear, really all he wanted to be was loved unconditionally...and that he has and it has helped him understand that it is ok to just be a dog.

Desi doesn't want to be greedy with wishes, but he hopes to be granted a forever home of his very own who will just continue to love him, as that is all he really wants.

Yesterday, we went to do something called 'pot luck'. This may look like a butt, but what it really is is a picture of me and my friends waiting by the pot for some of the luck.

I got higher up to have a better view of the pot... ahhhh, much better!

Puppies are growing!

Maserati's puppies are growing!
They will be 5 weeks old tomorrow.
Their weights are now:
Porsche: 6.4 pounds
Mercedes: 6.7 pounds
Ferrari: 6.8 pounds
Bentley: 7.0 pounds
Their personalities are developing and they are all delightful and friendly puppies so far!

Hi Everyone! Katie Grace here!

It’s been a little while since we last spoke
so I thought I would let you know what I’ve been up to.

As you might recall a few months ago I decided to summer in Maine.
I had never been to Maine but heard some nice things about the beaches,
beautiful hiking trails and fabulous shopping.

So I had to see for myself. Here I am driving shotgun to Maine.

It was a very busy summer!

First I met my two foster brothers Roosevelt & Coal

(that's me in the middle)

I wasn’t sure how I felt about them
but when we got to know each other we had lots of fun.
We took lots of walks together

I love to go for walks on hiking trails in the woods
because my two favorite things to do are
sniffing and chasing squirrels up into trees!

We had some fun walking on the beach too!
I love to run on the beach and wade in the cool water up to my belly.

My summer goal was to get in shape and lose a few pounds.
So I’ve been working out almost every day.

I jog sometimes

and I eat sensibly

and I get plenty of rest.

Shhhhhh, don’t tell my foster mom –
but sometimes when she’s not looking
my foster brothers and I jump on the bed.

Here we are trying to lure one of the house kitties
to come hang out with us. Shhhhhhh

In my free time I like to give back - so I volunteer for NEBCR.
I enjoy attending special events,
meeting new people, new dog friends
and mostly telling people about New England Border Collie Rescue.

Here I am at a special event called Woofstock in Old Orchard Beach Maine.
I was working the information booth and had a great day.

I also met lots and lots of new friends.
This little girl stopped to say hello and give me a hug.

I was so happy I had to sing!
She gave me a wonderful back scratch
(and a few treats, too shhhh).

My summer hasn't been all work though.
I've met lots of new dog friends too!
We hit it off in just a few minutes
and had a great day working & playing together.

Autumn has arrived in Maine and another fun event was MaineFest in October. My foster brothers and I met lots and lots of people and about 40 border collies at this event. We got to try WagIt Games, some great snacks, and we played all day. I was exhausted at the end of the day!

Can’t wait to go again next year!

As you can see I've been quite busy and having a great time in Maine.
So far Autumn looks to be shaping up the same way.

I heard it was hunting season in Maine
so on our trail walk I decided to roll in muck and hide my scent.

Here I am!

I tried to tell my foster mom it was the latest in doggie spa treatments but she didn’t go for it and I got a bath anyway. We also had snow early this year. I’m not sure how I feel about snow. IT WAS COLD on my toes. But after a few minutes I realized it was fun stuff!

I think I’m going to like Autumn and Winter in Maine
but what I’d really love is to find a home all of my very own
with a special friend or family to love me.

I hear the holidays are coming soon.
I wonder if Santa would grant that one wish for me.

I’ll have to ask him.

In the meantime, I'll just keep an eye out looking for my forever family.

Kyle explores the world

Mama Maserati, and pups Mercedes (mostly black female), Ferrari (black, tan, & white female), Porsche (blk&white female), & Bentley (black w/white boy) made their way to rescue today!

Maserati was found as a stray, shortly before giving birth. The ACO was boarding her in a vet clinic due to disease at the shelter. They were transferred to rescue today.

I swear it is awesome, like my expressive ears.

and still getting to play and romp and be silly is fantastic!

Hi, it's me, Scarlet.
This is so weird. One day all this cold, white stuff came down. This never happened in Texas! It was SO deep that I had to jump to get through it! But my brothers still needed herding, so off I went.

And I did all of this.....

Pocket Border Collie Seeks New Home

Hi, I'm Scarlet. My foster mom calls me a pocket border collie because she just scoops me up all the time for snuggles or if I'm bein' naughty. After years with no love from anyone, I really like this. She can carry me all around on one arm! But not for too long, she says I'm as heavy as a sack of potatoes, which must weigh around 25 pounds, 'cuz that's how much I weigh. She says you have to meet me to see how darn tiny and cute I am.

Here I am with my foster dad holding me. I'm showing off my patented Tongue-out, that I do when I'm tired or relaxed. It makes my foster family giggle.

On Aggression and Thyroid

Murphy's Story

This quirky, ball obssessed border collie landed in our lives in the fall of 2008. He wasn't without issues (who is?!) but we were smitten. When not chasing after balls or showing off his Lassie like qualities, he would climb on our laps, wrap his paws around our necks and give kisses galore. We took him to classes, played agility and laughed when a tennis ball landed in our bed at 6am sharp every morning.

But then this summer, something changed. First, we noticed an extra growl here and there. Then the snarls came. And later on, we would find ourselves cornered in random places by a dog whose hard stare would make your blood freeze. We knew something was very, very wrong.

A routine physical revealed nothing. Luckily, we and our vet were aware of the evidence linking sudden, unpredictable aggression to thyroid issues. We mailed Murphy's blood to dr. Dodds at a California based non-profit organization Hemopet specializing in thyroid issues (www.hemopet.org).

It only took a couple of days for the results to come back, and we were astonished to find that despite no clinical signs other than the aggression, Murphy was at the end-stage of hypothyroidism. His values were up to ten times lower than they should be for a dog of his breed and age!

Within 48 hours of simple treatment with inexpensive thyroid meds ($5-10 a month), Murphy was back to his old self. His eyes softened and we stopped seeing the freezing, growling and snarling that were a frequent occurance before the treatment.

We are incredibly thankful to have our sweet, mushy border collie back, but we wonder how many dogs die needlessly because people are not aware of the link between thyroid issues and aggression. Please spread the word.

This is me Ted! I have been buzy vacationing and learning human rules. Vacationing was fun. I got to do this a lot:

But foster mom sayz it paid off, and as a result, I am a pet border collie, no longer a semi-feral naughty dog. Also, I am now used to being home when the humans leave and I rarely bark! But hey, whatever rocks their boat... as long as they let me be the ball master and the snoozing-on-the-couch master, I am fine with their silly rules, hehe!

Hey everyone my name is Kyle.

When I first arrived in my foster home I spent several days just lying in my crate watching everything that was going on. It gets pretty exciting here in my foster home.

Once I felt comfortable enough I started to show interest in the other dogs in the house. I have the most fun outside.

I love to herd Kiefer when he is playing in the water.

As you can see I am a very good looking boy. I will be ready to share my new life with a wonderful family soon.

Meet Gidget!

Gidget is a 4 month puppy just come into rescue. She is a sweet little thing with a lot of personality!

Gidget is still learning the rules of living in a house like when to go outside and to love going in her crate but that's what puppies do! She will probably mature to be about 35-40 pounds and maybe 20" at the shoulder.
Gidget gets along with every dog she meets. She is respectful and backs right off if another dog tells her so. She is curious but reserved meeting new people but warms up quickly with some treats. Oh, she LOVES treats!
Here's Gidget on a play date with another 4 month puppy, Shaboo:

They really hit it off and Shaboo enticed Gidget to chase him which she was happy to oblige! You can see the herding drive kick in as they play but all very appropriate.
She even shows some propensity for the agility ring! Bravely following one of my dogs in the tunnels in the yard, then going through them on her own to explore.

Gidget will be available for adoption very soon and promises to make someone very happy! Watch for her to come on the site soon!

Lucy Update

Lucy is doing well and still looking for her forever home. She is such a delight and learning more every day! Here is a clip of her latest accomlishments:

It turns out Lucy loves her food! She is eager to offer all she knows to whoever has a treat! She can now sit, down, starting to come when called, will get in her crate and even on a bed all on cue! We are still working on impulse control but she is also a tugging machine!

We are working on fetch but she hasn't quite caught on to that game yet. I am sure she will soon though.

New dogs in rescue

A call came in yesterday that authorities were removing dogs from an overcrowded NY shelter situation, and several border collies needed our help. Our volunteers dropped everything and drove to get the dogs. We got two yesterday, and at least two more should be coming in today.

The two we got are terribly scared (and flea infested!) and will need lots of time and love to start recovering, but we look forward to seeing them blossom now that they will receive the care they need.

This past weekend, two of NEBCR volunteers got into a serious roll-over car accident that totalled their truck and camper.

Thankfully, all three of their dogs were safely crated in the back of the car, and despite the horrific picture you can see here, everyone walked out with only minor bruises and scratches.

If you don't crate your dogs or seatbelt them, please reconsider... if you don't have enough room for crates, there are wonderful tested harness products for dogs available. Some of our volunteers swear by the crash tested Roadie Ruff Rider seatbelts http://www.ruffrider.com/ .

Hi! Long time, now hear! See, foster parents said it was time to figure out something called 'futurecareer'! So I have been considering all of my options...

Ball supervisor?
World class dancer?
Cosmetic dentist?
Leash designer?
Finally, while contemplating life in my house yesterday, it dawned on me! I can be a magician! So when foster mom and dad got home from dinner last night, I surprised them! Instead of two dogs by the door, they were greeted by three, hehe! Just like David Copperfield - they left me in a locked cage, and I figured out how to get out to go and play with my friends. TedMagic, hehe.

I am now feeling little tired after all the hard thinking, so I am going to take a nap now so my mind is sharp when foster mom leaves the house so I can come up with more things to do, okay?

Scarlet plays!

Hi, it's me, Scarlet.

I have been stalking this weird basket full of furry and round things over the last few weeks at my foster home. Something made a noise in there and maybe it's alive and might pop out at me.

Well today I stepped on one of these things that Dash left out on the floor (a toy, I believe it's called) and heard that noise again. It really freaked me out and I jumped back out of the way! Then it happened again!

Pretty soon I realized that I could make it happen by biting it! I drug it around for awhile, checking back with my foster mom every few seconds to make sure it was safe.
This was my first attempt:

Once I started playing, there was no stopping me.

Here I am having a blast squeaking that thing and dragging it all over the room!

Yup, itz rightz. I am a proud ownerz of the MiracleButt™. Do I get some dandy butt award for this? Me thinkz I should. I tried to get a dead fish snack award when went to a place called thebeach today, but foster mom didn't let me have it. Bummer. Herez me on the place thebeach where I didnt get to eat dead fish and where I had to watch everyone have fun while I waz stuckz on a leash. At least I got to pee on the leash, hehe.

Desi has fur!!

Sorry it has taken Mom so long to blog about me,
but I am still being the best house guest ever.
I am very quiet in the house,
and I only chase the cats when they walk by me.
I just can't help myself.

I am still getting my baths, BOOOOO!
But I only have to suffer through them once a week now, YIPPEE!

And I let my foster Mom brush my fur.
Yeah, I said FUR!
I am no longer bald anywhere on my cute little body.

Ted's (Very) Busy Day

Oh hi! Itz me, NaughtyDogTed! Since I last seed you, I have been suspended from the boarding school kalled thehospital.

Oh wellz, at least the hole on my butt iz healing well - thankz to the work of dr.Michelle Gorbutt, dr.Joanne Ziemba and dr.Heather Blake at Greylock Animal Hospital. My foster mom sayz they went above and beyond to make me happy and healthy. I am also missing my other friendz at the hospital, especially my aunties Denise and Brittney. Thank youz for being so nice to me while I waz not feeling my best and was getting into mischief!

Here iz my buttz, looking goodz, don't you think?
Anyhow, todayz waz a buzy day here. My foster momz said she waz going to teach me to be apet. I don't knowz what apet meanz, but I went with it. First, she said, all petz have to have some badhabitz. So she taught me to lick her breakfast bowl clean. I liked learning badhabitz!

Then we did something called goforawalk. That waz good because I could sniffz and pee on everythingz. I liked that. When we got home, I made my foster mom proud by figuring out what the thingz called dogbedz are for. Finally, we worked on something called playing. It was little confuzing at first, but I think I made some... whatdotheycallit... progress.

First, I learned that eating sometimez countz as playing
Then I learned that rolling on my back and hugging these fuzzy thingz makez my foster mom giggle
I collected and tazted lotz of thetoyz
But the real reazon I got an A+ iz because I partizipated in something called gentle tugging (my foster mom said I cannot do real tugging until my butt is all healed - bummer).
Ugh, I am feelingz little tired, itz time to go and snooze on the thing called thedogbed.

Spryte Post-surgery Update

Spryte is back home!
The surgery went well; both the enucleation and spay.

Apparently she was very sneaky
and pulled her catheter out as soon as she woke up
and then went to work on her stitches.

We are thinking that she is related to NaughtyDogTed.

This earned her a cone immediately
and she is to wear it at all times for 2 weeks.

Spryte is NOT happy about this.

Frankly, neither is her foster mom. :-)

Let's hope for a speedy two weeks and quick recovery
and TONS of stuffed kongs in the meantime.

Spryte is a puppy mill survivor that arrived in rescue on April 17th.

Over the past few weeks she has made huge progress in coming out of her shell and slowly making canine friends and trusting humans. She still has a long way to go but she is on the right track.

Spryte is enjoying the great outdoors and is much more excited to explore new places and less nervous when she is with her foster brother and sisters.

Spryte only has one eye. Her foster mom has taken her to an Ophthalmologist who thinks that Spryte probably lost her right eye due to an injury or puncture. Unfortunately, there is nothing in the eye socket that can be saved, so an enucleation of what remains of her right eye has been recommended.

The estimated cost is $1,700.

NEBCR is able to cover the cost of this surgery, as well as any other veterinary services our foster dogs require, through the continued donations received from our many generous supporters!

With the completion of this surgery and followup, Spryte will have a pain-free life and her future adopters will not have to worry about eye infections.

Soaking up the sun

Oh hi! It's me, Ted! Wanna see my wound? Send me some chewies and I may show you, hehe!

Yup, its looking good. And I am looking good too if I may say so...

So, I am still at the boarding school they call The Hospital. It sounds very ivyleaguesh, don't you think? Anyhow, I got a new job. Really! My job is to interrupt conversations. So like when the ladies in white coats talk to the parents of the other hospital students, I bark and make sure they they can't hear a thing. Or when people are on the phone, I am there to ensure that they say the following phrase "I am sorry, I didn't hear what you said, can you repeat it?". If I have a good day, I make them repeat the phrase multiple times during one phonecall. I swear I see people's ears grow when they try to listen... I can grow earz too, see?!

I also developed new hobbies. My favorite hobby is to look so pathetic that the lady vet techs feel sorry for me and do extra stuff for me. Like buy me toyz, fetch me some treatz and give me snugglez. Then they say "you are so cute Ted"! Yeah right, just give me the treats, hehe.

Today, I discovered a new hobby - when foster mom and dad took me for a little walk, I realized I really enjoyed rolling in grass and soaking up the sun. It made me smile!

Desi update

Hello to all the friends of NEBCR!

Foster Mom said I should take some time and tell everyone how I am doing. Well, the other day I went to the vet and when I came home I was no longer

“No-name Stud Muffin,”

I am now just” Desi the Desirable.”

While at the vet they discovered my ears are still infected and so is my skin. When I first came into rescue I only had fur on my head and a little on my legs. I now get lots of baths to help my skin heal and to help new fur grow in.

I don't like them very much though...

I am trying to learning that people are not so scary. I love my foster family but I still like it better when they sit on the floor with me rather than walk around. I am still too scared to meet other people but my foster Mom has had me near other people just not too close.

I have learned that dog beds are soft, when you live with a family you get fed every day; you get snacks and treats and clean water. I have bones to chew and toys to destroy!

I will keep you in the loop as to how I am doing. Thanks everyone who has helped me on this journey to being a real dog. Hopefully someday soon I will be ready to look for a family of my own. For now my foster Mom says I can stay here and get better and braver.

This is me after I used my magic powers last night and removed the white sticky stuff from my behind. The humans drugged me thinking that would put me in a disadvantage, so I had to put on my best performance yet, but I won! I WON!!!! So today's score is Ted 1 - humans 0. Ha! Anywayz, see how that wound is healing?

And this is what the humans did in response. They have to be kidding, right? Well, it took me full 30 minutes before I figured out how to get the skirt off. Hehe!

Solving puzzles

Hi there,

My name is Ted. They named me after the nice pilot that flew me to NEBCR. But I think I have a middle name too because the lady in the white coat sometimes calls me "Thebaneofmyexistence". So I guess my full name is NEBCR Ted Thebaneofmyexistence.

Anyways, I know what the humans are up to! They are testing me to see just how smart I am! First, they wrapped my whole butt in some white sticky stuff. I think they were wondering if I am smart enough to figure out how to get it off. Well, that was a piece of cake, let me tell you. I unwrapped it in no time. Then they put a HUGE suction cup on my head, probably wondering if I can get the white sticky stuff off again. That was easy! I just waited until the humans fell asleep and weeeee, off the white things went. The next day, I showed them! This time, I got inventive and I took both the white things AND the suction cup off my head thinking that would be enough and they would let me out of the cage. Nope, they increased the stakes. Now I have a suction cup AND some foamy stuff wrapped around the suction cup to hold it in place. I love puzzles, but really, can you just let me out?

Busy week!

Yes, we have been very busy. This week alone, NEBCR has taken in TEN new rescue dogs. One older severely thunderphobic boy came from a private home, and an additional nine arrived on Sunday. These sweet nine border collies came from a puppy mill out of control where 167 dogs were turned over to the local Humane Society.

Our volunteers have been working around the clock (many using their treasured vacation days) to take care of these border collies.

All newcomers needed to be bathed and groomed.

Huge thanks goes to Dr. Whitney Pressler for volunteering several hours of her time to examine all of these pooches.

Unfortunately, some needed more than our volunteers could offer. This little boy whom we named Ted required an immediate surgery due to an injury he sustained during a dog fight before he came to NEBCR. Thankfully, he is recovering well under the watchful eye of a very special vet and person Dr.Michelle Gorbutt at Greylock Animal Hospital.

Taking in 10 dogs is a huge expense for a small rescue like ours. Despite the enormous discount we are getting from the veterinarians we are working with, Ted's care alone has already cost close to $1,000. Additionally, nine of the ten dogs will need to be spayed/neutered and all will have to be dewormed. Please visit www.nebcr.org if you can make a donation.

Hi, it's Kody again. My foster mom recently got a call from someone who was interested in their very first ever dog. One of the questions they asked was about how many toys a dog needs. So foster mom asked me and my foster brothersand sisters how she should answer that.

I jumped up on the sofa and began to ponder how I'd answer. In the meantime, Bek said that all a dog needs is a soccer ball. Then she remembered sometimes it is a fizz or a tug...

...but she was pretty sure that they only need one.

So I grabbed a bone and chewed as I pondered. As foster mom went from dog to dog, they each gave a different answer. So each time I grabbed another bone and chewed and chewed -- for inspiration. I wanted to make sure to answer the question the right way...since it is a very very important question. But I was getting confused by all the different answers.

It was finally my turn to answer...and suddenly I knew the answer.

I looked around and there it was. The answer was TWELVE!

Rusty's Wonder Family

Hey all! Remember me?? It's Rusty the Wonder Dog!!!

I know I have been kinda quiet for awhile but I have a good reason. I now have my very own forever family with Tom, Megan and my very own BC brother!!! We romp and wrestle all the time. How cool is that?

I'm already signed up for a class that will touch on all the things I love to do: agility, rally, obedience, etc. As soon as the snow melts I'll be headed out for some more herding lessons, too. Watch out sheepies here I come!!

All I had to do is sit like this and ask nicely.

Megan has been keeping me busy with lots of exercise and training.

Here we are playing a game called "101 things to do with a box."

My brother does canine freestyle dance, so I have been learning some of his moves like leg weaves.

Snow...really?!!!

Hi, this is Kody. My foster mom says I am living in Maine with my foster family until we find my forever family. But I didn't know they were lost!?

I am a guy with a great sense of humor. I am now 13 months old, but I am just learning about life so I still have the "wonder" of a young puppy. I LOVE SNOW!!! It feels really good on my tongue. I love scooping up mouthfuls of it. But my foster mom says she is ready for it to go away. Yesterday all she could say was "Snow...really?!!" My foster dad keeps taking the snow out of my yard so I can't play in it...bummer. But he says it is safer that way. I won't slip and hurt my leg again.

I am running great and having fun with my foster brothers and sisters. Today I went out with Andy, the baby dog in the house. He is only 6 months old. But he can be fun to play with. See how great I can run?

Then I got to play with Bek. I tried everything to get her to chase me, but I guess she likes eating snow even more than I do!

I am a fun loving guy who is looking for someone to play with me. Although I love the snow, I can't wait for it to melt...because I love mud even better! I am a boy through and through!

Meet Digby

Hi everyone,

It's me Bailey, and I am writing from my new location. I heard the humans say something about a 'foreverhome'. Do you know what that means? All I know is I was home on Saturday, then the door opened and there was this nice guy so I gave him a big hug and that was that. Then a nice lady came in, and behind her was a big fluffy border collie so I sniffed them too and we all played and then I hopped in their car and here I am. I hear they have cookies and toys and a swimming pool for dogs here, so I think I will hang out on the couch and see what happens. Meanwhile, they are giving me scritches and kisses, so it's all good. Anyhow, I hope you all stay warm and maybe I will run into you someday, okay?

Kody's best day ever!

Hi everyone!

It’s me, Kody! Are you wondering why my bio is not on the NEBCR site? Well, here is what happened. I broked myself. I mean, I broked my leg! This is what broken me looks like.

Do you want to know how all of this broking happended? This is how!

So once I am unbroken, I will be looking for a home. But meanwhile, I wanted to tell you about what happened today. Because today is Monday and my foster mom says this is going to be the best week ever! We just got back from the dog-ter. Now normally I wouldn't say that was very fun, but since I fractured my leg in December, mom keeps telling me that I can't do this and I can't do that...because the dog-ter said so. I have been on something the dog-ter called "restricted activity." I am not sure what the words mean, but it sure feels like jail for a young pup like me. So every time I see the dog-ter I sit real nice and look at him with my big brown eyes, hoping he will say it is ok for me to run around and play again.

well...today he said it!

Now I get to increase my exercise so I can get muscles back in that leg...

...and that means I am one step closer to being ready for my forever family. The dog-ter says I will be ready in another month.

Mom also said that this is a special week because I have my big-boy-one-year-old birthday. Happy 1 year old Birthday to me!

Get ready world, here I come!!!

Kramer's Last Message

And now his adopters Jen and Dan (and Ellie!), who have renamed him "Skip," have already fallen head over heels for him and all his silly, goofy, bouncy, barky antics.

Bailey's winter adventures

Hi everyone,

It's me, Bailey! And I am having soooo much fun this winter! We have been doing something called skiing, and it's awesome! My foster parents say I can only run in the deep white stuff if it's fluffy, because the heavy white stuff is not good for my knees, but it's okay because we always go to places that are 'groomed'. I haven't seen them use nailclippers or brushes to 'groom' the white stuff, but I bet that's what the humans do to make it less fluffy?

Anyhow, I have also been playing snow chase games with my foster siblings!

Anyhow, I am now feeling little tired, so I think I will go and snooze on the couch. Talk to you later, okay?!

Tufts university animal behavior clinic is currently conducting two studies in Border Collies.

1. Collecting behavior information of shadow/light chasing Border Collies through their questionnaire and 5-10 mls of blood sample from the dog for the genetic analysis. They also collect non-shadow/light chasing Border Collie information and blood samples too as a control group sample. They will reimburse all costs for blood sampling and shipping.

2. For affected dogs, they are also conducting treatment(medication)response study.

Nicholas

Meet Nicholas:

Nicholas is a dear, sweet 10 year old Border collie (or BC mix) who has had more than his fair share of hardships in life. Now in foster care, he is trying to move beyond all of that and move toward a new beginning! When he first came into foster care, it appeared he had shut down his feelings altogether. However, we are happy to report that as he has bonded with his foster family, he has begun to accept petting and belly rubs, and it has become clear he truly enjoys the attention! Slowly, as he begins to let his true personality show, we are glimpsing the lovable and silly dog inside, who, when the time is right, will thrive on the doting attention and companionship of a caring family.

Nicholas has become a shadow to his foster mom, never far from her if he can help it. He also enjoys the company of his canine foster brother and sisters, showing an interest in trying to join in with them as they chase balls and frisbees. He also shows a keen interest in livestock, his eyes dancing when he sees the cows and ducks in nearby pastures. Unfortunately, though the spirit is willing, Nicholas' body is not cooperating right now with his desire to join in all the border collie games.

Sadly, Nicholas was allowed to become grossly overweight, which, along with arthritis, makes it difficult for him to go up and down more than a few stairs. Sometimes he finds it difficult to lie comfortably for more than short naps, needing to get up and reposition himself to stay comfortable. Nicholas has been put on a weight reduction program to try and help him lose this excess weight - he is certain to feel years younger once it comes off, and his arthritis should cause him much less pain as well. He is currently taking supplements and pain medication to keep keep the pain under control as much as possible.

In addition to this, Nicholas suffers from chronic allergies that were left untreated or his first 8 years - leaving him, at times, with large areas of missing hair and irritated, itchy skin. These severe symptoms are under control thanks to a proper diet and medication, however some chronic skin and ear problems remain.

Finally, as if the above problems weren't enough, Nicholas was also diagnosed as diabetic. This may have been caused by medications used to control his skin problems. Due to the diabetes, his diet has to be carefully regulated, and Nicholas requires 2 insulin injections each day.

Nicholas accepts each of his medications and his insulin injections quietly and with dignity. He is grateful to receive a pat and a belly rub in trade, and happy to carry on shadowing his foster mom and longing for more mobility to join in the fun and games going on about him.

With continued support from New England Border Collie Rescue and his dedicated foster mom, Nicholas will get the chance to return to a healthy and comfortable weight, and he will have the opportunity to try herding ducks or chasing balls. Nicholas is available for adoption to a loving and dedicated family committed to providing the care that he needs and deserves. Kramer Fun Facts

This past week my foster mom, brother and sister and I have all been in NH visiting my foster mom's parents for the holidays. It has been a lot of fun and I've been such a good boy.

I wanted to share some fun facts about myself!

I LOOOOVE to go for romps in the woods.

Occasionally the romps turn into zoomies!

Despite my foster mom's insistence that they are no good for me, I'm a fan of finding big sticks and running off with them.

Or just running off!

Just kidding, I never let my foster mom out of sight and at the first call or whistle I hurry hurry right back!

I've also learned proper milk jug chasing techniques from my foster brother Didge

I've become good friends with my foster mom's family over the holidays (tasty treats helped!)

I was a little confused by the craziness of the presents and my foster brother and sister getting all wild about their toys...so I hid among some bags in the corner for a minute

but then I decided it wasn't so bad and had fun with some toys and enjoyed a tasty treat.

I survived an oatmeal bath today...

my foster sister Lizzie hung around the bathroom for moral support, but I have a sneaky suspicion that she simply was there to lick the rogue oatmeal off the floor (and walls and my foster mother's shoes...). Since the oatmeal mixture had oil, I seem to have a slight extra swirl to my fur now, and my foster mom's dad has been calling me Cosmo Kramer. I have no idea why. I am still adorable!

It's me, Wren! And this is my last blog! You know why?! Because I got a forever home for Christmas!!! That's right! I will never be unwanted again - I now have my own mom and dad and a couch and also a personal corgi to roll around with in the snow! Well, the corgi lives across the street, but she comes to visit often. I also hear that I will get to meet sheepies and take doggie classes for fun. But most importantly, my new home comes with lots of ball and snuggle time! So thank to all of you who were interested in me and I hope that another rescue dog will be lucky enough to go and live with you just like I did with my new family!

Lee's big weekend adventure

Hi everyone! It's me Lee!

So this weekend my foster dad said I needed to get something called culturalexposure. I figured culturalexposure must have been a chew toy or something so I readily agreed. Anywayz, so off I went with one of my NEBCR aunties and after I stole, I mean acquired, all of her coconut cookies (yum!) I found myself in a place called North Adams where they have muzeumz and stuff and it turns out culturalexposure is nothing to be excited about but being the sofistikated... or is it sophistigated... or sophi... anyways, smart dog that I am I went with the flow and while I collected no culturalexposure I did find some toys here and so I rolled on my back and did this

Oh hi everyone! It's me Wren! Or at least that's what they used to call me. But my foster parents seem to have serious problems with their memory because these days that seem to confuse my name all the time and call me Mischief instead!

Anyhow, I am still here in rescue because now that I am feeling better, I developed a new highly innovative game called 'herd your foster brother' and apparently it changes things a little. Wanna play?!

The rules of the game are very simple: "Foster borther is not allowed to move under any circumstances. Period." You can use a variety of strategies and tactics to accomplish this goal. I have found relentless body blocks, short barks and nips on the butt to be the most effective. It's hard work and you. cannot. lift. your. eyes. off. your. foster. brother. under. any. circumstance. HA!

Anyhow, they say I am as sweet as can be and never aggressive with other dogs, but my foster parents think that the majority of other dogs out there deserve to live a life free of TheLittleTerror. I will miss my daily wrestle games with my foster siblings, but I think I would be a bit more relaxed living with no other dogs (although some doggie friends for wrestling and chasing would be great!). So every night, I put my doggie glasses on and we are going back and reviewing more... what do they call them... oh yeah, applications and exploring some options.

Meanwhile, I thought I would share some pictures of me on vacation - you see, we are in a place called Buffalo and I have had lots of fun bouncing in the white powdery stuff and then snoozing in my favorite chair!

Hi, I'm Darby and I'm available for adoption! I'll be up on the website as soon as it cooperates! In the meantime, my foster mom will put it here along with my purty photos!

Well, as you can see I love to run and race around with my foster siblings, and I also love cuddling with my foster mom, too! Read on to see the bio she wrote up for me!

Darby is a beautiful, sweet young female Australian Shepherd with a tail, possibly with some Border Collie in her as well. She will be a year old in February, but has had a very rough start in life. Born at an isolated home in the woods, she lived there with her parents and brother and met very few, if any, new people. One day, her owner apparently needed to go away for the day, and left the 4 dogs tied to trees with their muzzles duct taped shut! Darby's mother escaped and found help, resulting in the pups eventually making their way to shelters. Darby unfortunately was struck by a car when she slipped her collar when out for a walk, resulting in a collapsed lung and internal bleeding. Fortunately, she has healed up completely and shows no lasting effects from her ordeal. From the shelter Darby made her way to NEBCR and she is being fostered in NY state, on the border of southern VT.

Due to a lack of proper socialization when she was younger, Darby is very shy and avoids interacting with new people. It takes her a couple of days to completely trust someone new, but once she does she becomes a little shadow, wanting to be right with you, go wherever you go and hang out as close as possible. Outdoors, she enjoys chasing after the other dogs in her foster home, and occasionally chasing after a toy, though she hasn't learned to bring them back yet but will pick it up and carry it a few steps so far before dropping it.

Indoors, she loves hanging out right with her person, snuggled up close and relaxing until the next trip outdoors to play.

She is a bit nervous as first meeting new dogs but quickly becomes comfortable and at ease with most dogs. She has had a harder time meeting very large, boisterous dogs, understandably. She is great with cats, completely ignoring them, unconcerned about them lying next to her, or running about playing in the house.

Darby is a bit of a talker, outdoors she will sometimes bark with excitement during play, although not too often. More often, she whines a bit when she's excited or needing a little extra attention, although this has grown less as she's become more comfortable in her foster home.

Darby is crate trained, and is learning some basic training, although mostly working on feeling brave and comfortable in new situations.

Her adopter will need to be patient working with her to continue to raise her confidence. She is very lovable, sweet and endearing, and certainly makes working with her rewarding and fun. She's going to make a lovely addition to the right household.

It is unknown how she is with children however due to her shyness we would probably not recommend her to a home with kids unless they were very dog savvy.

A fenced yard is preferred, but depending in the applicant's situation may not be required if we can be assured her adopter's are able to meet her exercise requirements, while ensuring her safety.

Completing an approved positive reinforcement based training class will be a requirement of her adoption.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving because I sure did! We went to my foster grandpaws' house and I got to be very thankful for being able to eat turkey necks and goose poop, run in snow, nip my foster sister's butt while running and snugglez with new people! Anyhow, you already know that I am very, very good at agility. But did you know I am also great at other things? Check this out!

Roosevelt Needs New Wheels!

Roosevelt's cart has been wonderful for him! He loves the freedom he has in it, running and racing.

Unfortunately, no one had any idea just how hard a young, healthy, extremely active and smart border collie would be on a cart! Even with multiple adjustments from the wonderful folks at Eddie's Wheels, it has become apparent that Roosevelt needs a heavier duty cart! It took them 3 hours to adjust his current cart on Friday, to get it back into alignment so it could be safe and usable until the new one is built.

The new cart will be much heavier duty, able to withstand the abuse that Roosevelt throws at it on a daily basis. It will still need routine maintenance and such - for example he has worn the tread off the tires! This will be something his adopter will need to monitor regularly and replace as needed. But, the idea is that with the heavier duty cart the structural integrity will be maintained, and not require so much adjustment so often.

Everyone at NEBCR is busy helping dogs in need so they put me in charge of fundraising. As a former stray and an NEBCR alum, I do have lots of real life experience, so I can handle this. You see, NEBCR auntie Kim and her doggie friend Dakota were selected as one of only 47 finalists for a petfinder voting contest. If they get the most number of votes, NEBCR gets $10,000 to cover some of the vet and other bills associated with helping dogs like me. Hi, It's Eli! I'm having a blast swimming, playing and relaxing, but mostly hoping someone will throw a toy for me. Here I am patiently waiting....

In this picture 3 silly puppies are trying to take me for a walk. I like puppies, they really know how to play! However, I did not want to go for a walk, I was still trying to wait for my ball to be thrown.

Roosevelt update!

osevelt is very comfortable in his wheel now! He runs right over to the cart and tries to put himself in it as soon as he sees it come out. He's going on walks now too, and also mastering all sorts of different terrains, hill, and is very talented at maneuvering around various obstacles he encounters. He's going up on the website as soon as our webmaster has a chance and we will be taking applications on him. Boy, are we going to miss him! What a great little dog he is.

After 17 months in rescue, I finally have a forever home!!! And not just any home! I got myself the perfect home!!! Yup, that's right... it's all mine, I don't have to share it with anyone! And listen to this! It comes with a personal ball thrower, a personal ear scritcher, a personal walker and I even have my own fully fenced in yard to run in AND a piece of creek to cool down in on a sunny summer day! Life does not get any better!

Here is my new family!

Roosevelt's big day

Roosevelt had a big day today. We left home at 11am and went to visit our friends at Eddie's Wheels for Pets for a 1pm appointment. They evaluated the fit of his cart and made some adjustments. It has not been lowered so that he should be able to pick toys up from the ground and drink out of a bowl that isn't elevated. He'll need to learn to do that, since it involves stretching his hind legs in a different way. We know he'll catch on quick, though. he folks at Eddie's Whee's took a little video of him zooming around chasing Arthur, which they posted on their facebook page. After leaving Eddie's Wheels, we drive another hour to consult with an orthopedic surgeon about Roosevelt's twisted front leg. We wondered if there was anything that might be able to be done to make it more usable for him. After examining the leg, the doctor felt that Roosevelt's radius was not developed, and the only bone he had that was usable in that portion of his leg was the ulna. His thoughts were confirmed by taking an x-ray. Normally, the radius would bear 80 percent of the weight. So the smaller ulna had grown a bit larger than normal to try and compensate, apparently. We discussed possibly surgical fixes, the chances of success and the pros and cons. Basically, they could cut the end of the bone, and fasten his wrist to the end of his ulna, using an exterior fixture to hold it in place for the healing process, which would take 8-12 weeks. If everything were to go perfectly, there was only a 50% chance of success, and a 50% chance that the limb would be made more painful. And the risk that things wouldn't go perfectly reduced the odds of a successful outcome.

Roosevelt is doing phenomenally in his cart, as you can see in the video above (or previous videos posted here if you can't see that one.) His quality of live is very high, he is a very happy guy, and his leg does not seem to bother him the way it is. Therefore, we don't think it's worth the risks associated to try and change it. We will of course continue to monitor him, as his future adopters will need to do, and reassess if some type of problem developed in the future. However, we really don't anticipate that!

So, the next step is to finish up his routine medical needs such as neutering and microchip (we have been holding off in case he was going to need to be put under for radiographs and the like.) Then we find his perfect family and he goes on to his forever home. He is such an amazing and delightful dog, we are going to be heartbroken to see him go!

Hey There, Floyd here...

I just wanted to give you some updates about me.

First I have lost 7lbs since being in foster care. Boy do I look Goooood!!!!!!!

I had my teeth re-checked by the vet.

He said I can start to eat crunchy food now. Yeah

I also now play with one of my foster brothers, Cisco. My foster mom tried to get a video but Cisco and I don't like the camera. Every time we see one we stop what we are doing. (sorry)

This doesn't really have anything to do with anything but I needed to tell you.

If you go for a car ride and the window goes down, fresh air blows in your face. It is so cool. No one ever did that for me before.

The coolest thing is that on Saturday my foster mom and dad took me to a place called Black Rock State Park. I had no idea what a State Park was but I do now.

I spend most of my time here sniffing the ground. Do you know how many dogs get to come to this place? A lot!

My foster mom hooked a long leash to her belt and off we went. We walked on a path for a while and then we walked in the snow. We walked by some water, through trees and I got to smell so many trees. We walked around for about an hour. Then Mom said that was enough. I wanted to go longer but mom said not to much the first time.

That’s it for now, but I'll let you know when I get to do something else for the first time.

Speaking of first times, I am still looking for a place to call my own and have someone really love me and make me part of their family.... for the first time.

I am Aidan and I am only 9 months old. (I'm the little guy on the right in the play picture). I recently came into rescue and am enjoying my foster siblings. I'm not up on the site yet as there is something about getting health records straightened out. I try not to concern myself with such matters.
They say I am a border collie, sheltie cross. All I know is I can use my eyes to get some sympathy from humans. My foster mom says I need to loose some weight. Has she ever heard of winter insulation? OK, maybe she's right, but I'm still cute!
I really like my older foster brother, Jack. I like to follow him around and imitate what he does. He's a bit of a snob and VERY possessive of his toys, but I was able to win him over. I can get just about anyone to play with me. Missy, my foster sister, is a little quirky. She was so scared to meet me. To be honest, I was taken back too with her silly barking displays. It didn't take long to figure out she was just a scaredy-cat. I made it a point to get her to play with me. Now she is great fun to run with. You would think she could turn fast, but no. I can quick, spin and leave her in the dust! It's so much fun.

Hi, it's Eli.

Just wanted to update my fans on some of my newest tricks!

First, there's this one where I lean my head back and I turn into a bat:

Hmm....what else can I do....
-Go around between my crate and the wall to hide toys for myself to find later.
-Stick my head into the shower for a little drink (or the toilet, whichever seems yummier at the time).
-Chew on an antler WHILE my foster brother, Scout holds onto it for me.

-I have also started following my foster mom around the house and sitting, wagging my tail hard and staring up at her for pets. I really like snuggling my head next to a person's head. Or I start falling asleep if the person pets/holds my head.

Yes, some have said that I have mellowed a bunch since my 'boy' operation, and since settling into my foster home. I'm a very sensitive soul. And even though I'm a puppy, if you give me a soft place to lay and a chewy, I'm good for awhile. I love every person I meet, I don't bark at people and I like to play, follow my person around and snuggle. I also am learning to like car riding!

I think those are some really good tricks, don't you?

Today Roosevelt got his cart!! We would like to say a huge THANK YOU!!! to the anonymous donor who called and paid for his cart. Your generosity is overwhelming. Thank you.

A front wheel cart is a greater adjustment for a dog than a rear wheel cart, but Roosevelt really did awesome! He's a little afraid of the cart when he has to be put into it, but this will shortly pass, as he understands the freedom it brings him. He will soon learn how to relax into the cart and allow it to support him while he walks along.He's already had another session in the cart just now, and he did even better. We'll be sure and put updates as he figures it out.

ps - Roosevelt was supposed to have a consult with an orthopedic surgeon this week to see if anything can be done to help his left leg, but the snowstorm interfered, so we will be rescheduling that.

Cricket Speaks

Hey there! My name is Cricket! OK, so I'm not a full Border Collie but my mother is :-)

We used to live on a farm and had lots of fun chasing the animals. It turns out they didn't like that. Who knew??? Anyway, that's why we ended up in a shelter. It was very scary there. The people were very nice to us but we just couldn't help being so very afraid.

Then the NEBCR people came to see us. One of them took my mother home to live with her forever and ever. I have to wait in a foster home for my forever family to come along. But that's OK as long as it doesn't take too long. Oh yeah, in case you are wondering, I am eleven months old and weigh twenty-two pounds.
